HP Laptop Power Problem

This document will attempt to explain the procedure for repairing the power jack problem common to a lot of HP (and other) notebook computers. On these types of power jacks the offending culprit is usually the thin piece of metal noted as figure A.

The easiest way to test if that is in fact the problem is to get a small piece of bare wire and place it against the strip of metal (figure A.), Then to carefully plug in the jack, making sure not to let the wire touch the post (figure B.). If this allows the laptop to charge or power up then you are ready to proceed to a more permanent solution.

The easiest solution is to take a small screwdriver and pry up the thin bar of metal(Figure A.) so that it is bowed out slightly towards the pin (Figure B.), this solution will last for about 3 months of normal usage, then you will have to pry it up again. I have found that if you place a small sheet of cardboard behind the strip (Figure A.) it will last for years.

  1. Hi,

Great, this works! I have the same problem with the DV4000 I bought. But one thing: how did you manage to bow the thin bar? And how did you manage to apply cardboard behind it? Did you disassemble the laptop?
